Is a Sober Living Program Right for Me?

A woman in a sober living program

Sober living programs support people with severe addictions who need a stable and sober home to live in while working on their recovery. It is for clients who complete a residential treatment program but don’t have a sober home to continue the next phase of their recovery. Sober living treatment programs are an essential step in the recovery process. Why? Because they can give people time to adjust to a sober lifestyle.

Sobrius is an addiction treatment center that welcomes people from all over Virginia who need a full-time recovery program. Treating severe addictions is a months-long process with different levels of treatment. Those who begin with an inpatient program will transition to outpatient treatment programs and have the opportunity to stay in a sober living home if their family home is one of their triggers.

Sober Living Programs

A sober living program does more than just provide a safe space for people to continue working on their recovery journey. It gives them time to adjust to living a sober lifestyle while still having the safety of a sober living space to come home to. This program typically follows inpatient treatment and runs alongside outpatient treatment programs.

Clients will attend therapy sessions during the day or evening while living in a structured environment with their peers and supervisory staff. These communities support their continued recovery while they transition out of an inpatient treatment program and begin outpatient treatment.

This transition period can be very difficult. Relapse rates are extremely high for those who do not have a stable, supportive home or stop attending therapy after completing the first stage of recovery. Reports show that within the first six months after completing inpatient treatment, 40–75% of clients who stop therapy will relapse.1

Those who continue with their therapy while living in a sober community will have an easier time abstaining from drugs and alcohol. Clients participate in relapse prevention therapies while developing new life skills and continue working with a therapist on an outpatient basis.

Sobrius welcomes adults who struggle with addiction and need a safe and sober space to reflect, heal, and recover. Our sober living treatment programs give clients a dedicated home free from drugs and alcohol. This promotes the building of healthy routines and a long-lasting sobriety.

The Benefits of Sober Living Homes

Sober living homes are very beneficial to those who struggle with addiction and don’t have a stable support system outside of recovery. Clients can stay in a sober community while they continue with their therapy and work with their families to create a safe and sober home. Sober living teaches people a number of life skills that are essential for clean living and good mental health.

The following are some of the benefits of sober living homes:

Create Long-Lasting, Meaningful Relationships With Peers

Sober living is much easier when you have a strong support system that will be there for you during difficult times. You will have time to bond with your peers, who can be there for you during recovery and long into the future.

Ongoing Support in a Structured Environment

Clients will continue with behavioral and holistic therapies to develop and fine-tune coping skills, along with family therapy to repair broken trust and create a stable and supportive living environment.

Life Skills Lessons

Sober living homes give clients a chance to develop and improve on a number of life skills, including: from

  • Doing laundry
  • Keeping their home clean and orderly
  • Shopping for healthy foods
  • Meal prep and cooking
  • Finding a job
  • Establishing routines
  • Starting an exercise program
  • Maintaining their hygiene

These essential life skills and others are important for maintaining a sober lifestyle.

Eases the Transition to Normal Life

Building a sober lifestyle is a major change and one that will take time to get used to. Sober living programs are designed to give clients the time they need to rebuild their lives, establish routines and new relationships, and get used to a drug and alcohol-free life.
